EUROPE, SHE LOVES
directed by Jan Gassmann
Europe on the verge of social and economic change. A close up into the shaken vision of four couples, daily struggles, fights, kids, sex and passion. A movie about the politics of love.

What others say:
"It examines the states of mind of heterosexual couples from Seville, Tallinn and Dublin to Thessaloniki. In passing, it also - laconically, humorously, pensively, sexily – measures the temperature of a patient called Europe."

„Small moments of daily drama admittedly, but the cumulative effect is undeniably powerful.”

“«Europe, She Loves» is impressive, if only as an attempt to trace the reality behind the European idea. For once, it is not the ever-negotiated social and political rules that are the politics of Brussels, but their reflection in private, the negotiations, constraints, hopes, and disappointments among people, the smallest political unit of all. It is amazing how many hard and soft facts come together in the 100 minutes. But even more amazing is the feeling at the end: this Europe exists. We know these people. That's us."

„“Even the drugs have got boring. Well, sex is still good when you get it,” sings Kate Tempest in her song Europe is lost during the film credits. The song could well function as the hymn of Gassmann’s “boredofitall generation” — a generation that is usually called millennial or “generation y” as a reference to the previous post-baby-boom generation that received the letter x. Instead, i would call it “generation xxx”. The triple x would allude to this generation’s three crossed-out expectations: Of economic participation, of european democratisation and of european unity. It would also refer to the fact that this generation grew up with “live porn streamed to their pre-teens bedrooms.” The film’s visual language is the fruit of porn’s self-evident ubiquitousness, and this fruit is not at all rotten.

“Sex and drugs play a big role for everyone, depending on the situation they are either tranquilizers or stimulants, consolation or blessing. Their function is that of a seductive antidote that for a few minutes pushes aside the complete surrender of this generation to global predatory capitalism, on which it is simultaneously dependent. Gassmann's concern is a political one. His characters seek a way into life, but the circumstances seem to hinder them. He metaphorically portrays this time and time again."
